Giant Storage

How a Small Business Website Platform Took a Six-Location Storage Company from 78 Keywords to Page-One Rankings in Three Months

The Challenge

Giant Storage is a family-run self-storage business with six locations across South West England: Salisbury, Amesbury, Warminster, Frome, Yeovil and Crewkerne. Owner Henry Langdon had built the business to healthy revenue, but the digital presence wasn’t keeping pace.

When Devstars came on board as fractional Marketing Director in mid-2025, three problems were holding the company back.

The website wasn’t converting. Pages were feature-led rather than emotion-led, full of template language like “comprehensive storage solutions” and “state-of-the-art facilities.” Nobody searching for storage at 10pm after a stressful house move responds to that.

Content publishing was broken. Creating a single article took over five hours. Pasting content into WordPress lost all formatting. Container pricing was manually entered on every page, meaning one price change required updating dozens of pages individually.

SEO foundations were weak. The site ranked for just 78 keywords versus a key competitor’s 823. No structured location pages. Schema markup was either missing or riddled with errors, wrong phone numbers, incorrect coordinates, address mismatches.

Henry’s a pragmatic, data-driven business owner. He needed results quickly but couldn’t justify a £15,000–£25,000 ground-up rebuild. The investment had to be proportionate.

The Strategy

Rather than proposing a full rebuild, Devstars deployed its small business website platform, a pre-built WordPress framework designed for multi-location service businesses on constrained budgets.

Template first, then scale. We built a high-converting location page template and proved it worked on one site before rolling it across all six. The same structure could be repurposed for persona campaigns, seasonal pushes and promotional landing pages.

Research-led messaging. Before writing a single line of copy, we analysed over 6,000 authentic customer reviews across the UK self-storage industry, covering competitors like Fox Self Storage, Big Yellow, Safestore, Storage Factory and Strong Room. The critical finding? “Stress” appears in over 40% of positive storage reviews. “Stressful” was the single most common descriptor across the entire dataset. Customers aren’t buying square footage. They’re buying relief from anxiety during house moves, renovations, bereavements and business growth.

This research shaped everything. Headlines shifted from “flexible storage solutions” to “Self-Storage That Takes the Stress Away.” Pricing messaging moved from “competitive pricing” to “the price you see is the price you pay.” Security copy changed from “state-of-the-art” to “solid steel containers, not flimsy walls.” FAQs were structured around genuine pre-purchase anxieties: “Will my stuff stay dry?”, “Are there hidden fees?”, “What if my plans change?”

Empower the team, don’t replace them. We configured WordPress with RankMath pre-set, simplified blog publishing, and centralised container pricing so updates happened once and reflected everywhere. Annie, the client’s content creator, was set up with a Claude Project containing brand voice guidelines, customer avatars and the review research bank. Publishing time dropped from five-plus hours to under one.

What We Built

Every location page follows a proven structure: emotional headline, trust bar with review rating, transparent pricing table, “Why Steel Containers?” differentiator section, persona-targeted content blocks, location-specific FAQs and embedded Google reviews.

LocalBusiness schema was implemented across all six locations with verified NAP data, correct geo-coordinates, FAQ schema for rich snippet eligibility and pricing structured data.

The site now leads with Giant Storage’s genuine differentiators: steel shipping containers (not plasterboard partitions), 24/7 access 365 days a year, ground-level drive-up loading, transparent pricing with VAT included, no minimum contracts and family-run local service.

We also created five SOPs covering blog writing, social repurposing, review collection, directory submissions and content workflows.

The Results

The new site went live in December 2025. Within three months, the results were unambiguous.

Organic search performance.  January 2026 baseline showed 45,000+ monthly impressions and 650 organic clicks across all six locations, with rankings established for location terms across all six towns. The January data revealed strong impressions but click-through rates suppressed by title and meta combinations that hadn’t yet been fully optimised. Once schema markup, updated snippets and FAQ sections were rolled out in late January, the site entered a monitoring phase for CTR uplift.

By March, the results were unambiguous. Key location terms had climbed from mid-page positions into the top three:

  •  “Storage containers salisbury” — position 1.6
  • “Storage containers yeovil” — position 2.0
  • “Storage units frome” — position 2.6
  • “Container storage salisbury” — position 3.4

These aren’t niche long-tail terms. They’re high-intent, commercially valuable keywords. Moving from position 10–14 to the top three represents a step change: positions 1–3 typically capture 40–60% of organic clicks versus 1–2% at positions 10–14.

The competitive insight that made it work. None of the competitors were targeting Giant Storage’s actual service areas. Fox Self Storage focuses on South Wales and Bristol. Storage Factory targets Devon. Strong Room covers the Hampshire coast. Nobody was competing for Salisbury, Yeovil, Frome, Warminster, Amesbury or Crewkerne. The website was specifically designed to claim this unclaimed territory.

PPC performance improved too. Landing page experience had been flagged as “average to below average” under the old site. PPC engagement rates more than doubled from 36% to 65%, and paid search traffic saw a 600% month-on-month increase during the optimisation period.

What’s Next

The digital foundation is in place. The roadmap includes building Wiltshire and Somerset regional hub pages for county-level search traffic, expanding content clusters around business storage, student storage and vehicle storage, implementing Storman-to-Brevo API integration for automated email marketing, and scaling PPC spend from July 2026 in line with Henry’s planned investment increase.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a small business website platform?
down

It’s a pre-built WordPress framework with conversion best practices, SEO configuration and schema markup built in from the start. It gives multi-location service businesses a professional digital presence without the cost or timeline of a fully bespoke build.

How long did the project take?
down

The new site went live in December 2025, approximately 8 weeks from the start of the engagement. The first three months focused on optimisation, content deployment and performance monitoring.

What results did Giant Storage achieve?
down

Within three months, the site achieved position 1.6 for “storage containers salisbury,” position 2.0 for “storage containers yeovil” and position 2.6 for “storage units frome.” PPC engagement rates more than doubled from 36% to 65%.

Why not build a fully custom website?
down

A bespoke build would have cost £15,000–£25,000 and taken 8–12 weeks. For a family-run business with six locations, the platform approach delivered the same commercial outcomes at a fraction of the cost, and the team can maintain it independently.

How does research-led messaging work?
down

We analysed over 6,000 real customer reviews across the UK self-storage industry to understand what language customers actually use. This research directly informed every headline, FAQ and call-to-action on the site.

Can the platform scale as the business grows?
down

Yes. The template-based approach means new campaign pages, location pages and content clusters can be deployed rapidly within the existing system. When Giant Storage’s planned July 2026 budget increase activates, the infrastructure is already in place.

What role does schema markup play?
down

Schema markup helps search engines and AI platforms understand your business details, locations and services. We implemented LocalBusiness schema across all six sites with verified addresses, correct coordinates, FAQ schema for rich snippet eligibility and pricing structured data. This is increasingly important for visibility in AI-powered search results alongside traditional Google rankings.

How did content velocity improve?
down

Before the platform, a single blog post took over five hours. The simplified WordPress environment, centralised pricing system and Claude-assisted workflow brought that down to under an hour. Annie, the client’s content creator, can now produce optimised, brand-consistent posts independently without developer support.
